It uses large illustrations and short simple labels — "a red tomato," "a green leaf," "a yellow flower," "a big pumpkin." Children look at the picture, find the matching item in the garden, and check the box. No reading required — the illustrations do all the work. The Kindergarten-1st Grade garden scavenger hunt printable (KG-A-002) adds slightly more complex descriptions — "a long cucumber," "a purple eggplant," "something round," "a garden bug." Illustrations still accompany every item. A Garden Explorer Questions section at the bottom gives children four simple open-ended questions to think about and answer — "What was your favorite thing you found?" and "What do you think helps plants grow?" This version of the garden scavenger hunt printable is ideal for early readers and works well as a hands-on science activity for kindergarten and first grade classrooms.

 

The Grades 3-4 garden scavenger hunt printable (KG-A-004) is the most advanced version. Twenty items with more specific science-focused descriptions — "a leaf with insect damage," "a plant that uses a trellis or support," "an insect that is helping the garden," "a compost bin, pile, or compost tumbler." Four Garden Detective Questions at the bottom require higher-order thinking — "Which vegetable in the garden looks the healthiest? Why do you think so?" and "How do you think the plants help each other?" A Bonus Challenge section asks children to find examples of living, non-living, natural, and man-made things in the garden — a science classification activity built right into the garden scavenger hunt printable. Extra credit asks children to draw their favorite thing they found.
