How to Make Your Gift Box

The gable box, tied with raffia, in front of a few of our other boxes.
  1. Choose a box. The seed packet box holds 4 to 6 seed packets standing up. The small square box is a 2¼ inch cube. The box with a lid is 3 by 3 by 1½ inches, with a lift-off lid. The gift card box is a flat box with a lid, sized for a gift card. The gable box is shaped like a little house and ties shut with a ribbon.
  2. Choose a picture. Pick one of 33 watercolor designs: garden patterns, garden flowers, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, and weddings. Or use your own photo.
  3. Choose where the picture goes. "Every side" covers the whole outside of the box. "Front only" saves ink.
  4. Print on cardstock. The box prints sideways (landscape). Choose Actual size or Scale 100%, and turn off headers and footers.
  5. Cut and score. Cut on the solid lines. Lay a ruler along each dashed line and run the back of a butter knife, or use a scoring tool, along it. Then fold every dashed line.
  6. Glue. For the seed packet box and the square box, glue the narrow side flap inside the last panel. For the box with a lid and the gift card box, fold the walls up and glue each small corner flap inside the next wall, on both pieces. For the gable box, glue the side flap, fold the two short bottom flaps in, then glue the two long bottom flaps over them; they overlap for a strong bottom.
  7. Fill and close. Tuck in the ends, slide on the lid, or tie the gable box shut. Add a gift tag or a gift sticker.

A small box makes even a simple gift feel special. These free printable gift boxes have watercolor garden patterns, flowers, and holiday pictures. They pair nicely with our free printable seed packets.

Party favors: Set a small box at each place for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, filled with chocolates, nuts, or a homemade cookie. They go well with our free printable place cards.

Ideas to fill them: seed packets from your garden (if you need seeds to share, Seed Savers Exchange has thousands of heirloom varieties), homemade fudge or caramels, a bar of handmade soap, a small jar of honey or jam, flower bulbs, a garden-themed ornament, or a gift card.

What paper should I use?
White 65 lb cardstock makes a sturdy box that still folds neatly once you score the lines.
Can I write a name on the box?
The boxes have no words, so the picture can shine. Add a gift tag, a sticker, or write on the inside of the lid.
Can I use it on my phone?
It works best on a computer connected to your printer, where you can choose landscape, the paper size, and the scale.
