Should Cats Be Allowed in the Garden?

by Wendy Lee Shackelford
(Attica, IN USA)

Is it a myth or fact if a cat urinates on your tomato plants it will not produce?

ANSWER:

It seems like a myth to me. Tomato plants grow their fruit from the blossoms they produce. You would have to remove the blossoms from the plant in order not to have tomatoes. Cat urine could possible burn your plant foliage, though, so if you notice this happening, water the plant well to dilute the urea.

It can be difficult or impossible to keep a cat out of the garden. Therefore, it is really important to wash your vegetables carefully before cooking or eating them.

Mouse Traps In the Garden
by: Ray

I use mouse traps. I wrap the part that catches the mouse with a thin strip of cloth about 6 inches long. It will keep the trap from closing. Put several around your garden. When the cat springs one it will scare the bejeezrs out of it. It also works in flower beds and keeps them off the car.

Ray, you are a genius!

Cats in the Garden
by: Derrick

Besides a BB Gun, or a cat trap from the pound, is there any way to keep the local cats from using the garden as a litter box? My daughter helps out and I don't really want her picking up a new "dirt clod".

ANSWER:

I don't know of a good way to keep cats out of the garden. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this?
