Plant Your Vegetable Garden Seeds or Small Transplants

Choose your favorite vegetables to grow in your garden. Most garden vegetables can be easily grown from inexpensive seeds.

Follow planting and thinning instructions on seed packets or plant labels.

Use our free zone chart and planting guide to determine when each type of vegetable can be planted in your area!

How to Start a Garden--Fifth Step

    Add Mulch

Add a layer of mulch to the surface of your vegetable garden.

This will help retain moisture for your plants, and help prevent weed seeds from sprouting.

How to Grow Vegetable Garden--Sixth Step

    Watering Vegetable Garden

    Watering your vegetable garden:

  • Provide adequate water as needed depending on your weather conditions, and soil condition.

  • When your garden is just beginning, water everyday for 15-30 minutes depending on weather. It it is hot weather, water morning and evening for 15 minutes.

  • Once your plants are established (4-5 weeks), reduce water to 20 minutes once a day in hot weather, and 20 minutes every other day during mild to warm weather.

  • These are general guidelines. Your garden soil should be kept damp; not wet and soggy. It is ok for the surface of the soil to dry between watering, but it should not crack or dry out much below the surface.

  • Once your garden is established, water only in the morning. Evening watering will cause some of your plants to develop powdery mildew on the foliage. This can easily be avoided by simply watering in the morning so that plants have time to dry before nightfall.

    Keep the weeds out!

Harvest vegetables promptly as they ripen.

Watch out for slugs and insects that may be feasting on your plants. You can purchase organic pesticides and insecticides at your local garden center if needed.

You can see that learning how to plant vegetable garden can be very simple. Plan a small and simple layout for your first garden. It is easier to build on your success each year.

Involve your family; growing your own food is a valuable life-skill that parents and grandparents can pass on to their children. It is also a relaxing and interesting hobby that can provide fresh high-quality food for your family!
