How to Plan a Garden

The first and most important step to designing a successful garden is to do some planning. Designing a garden plan will not only answer all of your questions and concerns, but it will also give the beginner a great deal of focus and confidence.

Points to Consider When Planning a Garden

What sunny space do you have available?

  • This will help determine the location of your garden.
  • How much time can you spend on gardening?

  • This will help you determine the size and type of your garden.
  • How to Plan a Garden

To begin with, you need to decide what size garden you will plant, and which vegetables you want to grow in your garden.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended that you start small when learning how to design a vegetable garden.

Many new gardeners are overly ambitious and put in gardens they don't have the time or energy to tend.

This can lead to a bad experience; guilt, anxiety and other stressful feelings!

So it is best for the beginner to simply start small and select a few of their favorite vegetables.

How to Design a Backyard Row Garden

    how to design a garden

  • Choose a sunny spot.
  • Level well-drained ground is best.
  • Locate near a source of water.
  • It is also important that it not be located near any trees or bushes as their roots may grow into or under your garden and rob it of water and nutrients.

  • To start, mark the area of your yard you have selected for your garden.
  • Then remove the grass with either a shovel or a spade. Depending on the size of your new garden this can be a big job, so you might want to enlist your husband or children to help you!
  • After the grass has been removed you can start working up the soil.
  • The standard depth for a vegetable garden is about a foot, so make sure you dig at least that deep.

It helps to have access to a rototiller or garden tractor at this point!

  • Next you should add some compost, organic fertilizer, and peat moss, and mix it with the soil. These materials will aerate the soil and provide essential nutrients for your growing plants.
  • Then, you can mark the rows for your garden layout.
  • Plant your vegetable seeds, following the instructions on the seed packets.
  • Cover them up and water them well.
  • After that all you need to do is have patience and water your garden regularly.

  • Remove weeds promptly! And that is how to design a garden of your own.
  • How to Design a Container Garden

    how to design a garden

A container garden can be placed on your porch, patio, balcony or even in your yard or flower beds.

This is the most simple and quick way to have a vegetable garden.

There are some limitations to a container garden; you won't be able to grow everything you could grow in a large in-ground garden.

But the ease of care and convenience of a container garden can be a huge benefit!

  • Choose containers (3-5 gallon size) with drainage holes
  • Fill containers with potting soil
  • Plant seeds or small plants
  • Water whenever top inch of soil is dry
  • Fertilize with fish fertilizer every 2-3 weeks

When learning how to design a garden it helps to get a bit technical and talk about vegetable growing times!

Not surprisingly, most vegetable grow best during certain times of the year.

For example broccoli, onions and garlic are considered spring and summer plants. They are also hardy crops, which mean that they can stand a bit of cold.

On the other hand plant like tomatoes, corn and beans are known as tender crops, and they must be planted during the spring since they cannot survive cold freezing weather.

    Equipment and Materials Needed

When learning how to design a garden, other things to consider include the equipment and materials. Thankfully, putting in your own garden is an inexpensive job!

All you need is a gardening fork, a shovel, a hoe and a spade.

As for materials, of course you will need your vegetable seeds as well as compost or potting soil, both of which can be purchased at any home and garden store.

There is nothing quite like fresh vegetables from the garden! Not only are they superior in taste to anything you might find in the store, but they are also far healthier for you and your family.
