Tips on Home and Garden Supplies

Home and Garden Supplies

Where do you start when planning this year's vegetable garden?

Finding good sources for home and garden supplies is an important part of your home gardening venture.

Many gardeners have a favorite local gardening center, while others prefer to do their shopping online at one of the many online gardening centers. Whichever way you prefer, you will find that there are many great sources of home and garden supplies available! One of the joys of gardening can be the thought and planning that comes before creating your garden. Shopping for home garden supplies can be a big part of that process.

Where to Start

For the beginning gardener, the basics may include hand tools, gardening gloves, seeds, garden plants, and potting soil. Additionally for porch, deck or patio gardening, containers will be necessary. These can be recycled containers already on hand, inexpensive plastic containers, or more expensive wooden, clay or ceramic containers. For in-ground gardening, a few tools such as a spade, hoe, and rake will be necessary. A rototiller or garden tractor will be very helpful. For indoor gardening, supplies may include seeds or plants, containers, potting soil, and in some situations, grow lights.

What Quality to Purchase?

In general, purchase the best quality garden supplies that you can afford. Higher quality supplies will usually be a better investment over the long run. Don't try to skimp on the basics, but there are some ways to save money. Watch for sales locally or on-line, or check garage sales or second hand stores for good quality gardening supplies. Also, it is possible to find very inexpensive home and garden supplies such as disposable containers for starting seeds, that will work just fine unless you want to be able to re-use the same containers for several years. In this case, buying a better quality will be worthwhile. Or you can save small plastic yogurt and cottage cheese containers for starting seeds indoors; it's a good way to recycle these items. Potting soil is one supply where it is especially important to buy the best quality that you can find. Your plants will be "happier" and will produce more vegetables or flowers for you to enjoy!

Home and Garden Supplies

Online or Local?

There are certain advantages to shopping locally for part of your home and garden supplies. Small plants are usually better purchased locally, as local garden stores offer plants that are especially selected for your local climate and growing conditions. Larger tools such as rakes, spades, and hoes should be purchased locally and tested for weight and feel by the "prospective user", as it is most important that they be as comfortable as possible. Potting soil should probably be purchased locally, as it is heavy and expensive to ship. All other supplies can easily be purchased online from your favorite gardening source.

What to Buy?

Be frugal when buying your home and garden supplies! One of the best reasons to grow your own garden is to save money, and enjoy your own fresh flowers and vegetables at the same time! It is better to spend a little more money buying a better quality item that you really need. Save money by not buying items that you won't really need! Make a list of the supplies you must have. Stick to your list. If you are not sure whether you need a specific item or not, wait! For planting a vegetable garden, there are really very few tools and home and garden supplies that are totally necessary. Your first garden will be your most expensive, as you will need to invest in basic tools in addition to the actual garden supplies. Your next garden will be quite cost effective, as all you will need to buy will be the actual seed and plants, and new potting soil for your containers if you are planting a container garden.

Shopping for home and garden supplies can be fun and rewarding. You will find inspiration and great ideas to try in your garden. Stock up on the garden supplies you know you will need early in the season. Having the basic home and garden supplies on hand will save time when suddenly the weather is perfect, and you want to get right out in the garden and have some fun!
