Design Your Own Vegetable Garden Layout Using our Free "Vegetable Garden Planner" Software!

Having the proper hand garden tools makes a world of difference when a garden is in the works. From trowels to pruning tools there are several tools that are needed to help plant and maintain your garden. Bulb planters, hoes, spades and rakes are all hand tools that you will need if you are planning on having your own garden.

Planting a garden is enjoyable and it is a lot easier if you have the right hand garden tools for the job. Having the basic garden tools at your disposal will make planting as well as getting the area ready to plant a much simpler task.

Hand Tools for Gardening Preparation

Get an idea of what type of tools you are going to need and make a list. For the best production your garden can give you, whether it is vegetables or flowers, the secret is to prepare the area well before planting. Planting does not consist of just putting the plants or flowers in the ground and watering them occasionally, (unless you are so fortunate to have a gardener!)

What Hand Garden Tools Will You Need Most?

Hand Garden Tools

The hand garden tools you will be using will do the work of taking care of the plants and eliminating weeds from your garden. The basics include a hand trowel, hand rake, pruning clippers, hoe, spade, and tall rakes. There are many other tools available, and as you spend more time gardening, some of the specialty tools will come in handy.

Garden Hand Tools

If you are going to be a gardener you will need a good hand trowel. This is great for a variety of uses. Scooping up pebbles, compost and anything else you need to scoop, using this hand garden tool will allow you to get your garden area ready for planting. It is also useful for digging holes in the dirt when transplanting vegetables or flowers.

A hand rake is a tool that looks like a large fork with bent prongs. It is good for loosening and smoothing soil, removing small rocks and debris from your garden area, and some weeding jobs when the weeds are small.

Starting with the hoe, there are different varieties so you will be able to choose the one that suits your needs. It should feel comfortable in weight and height, and be relatively easy for you to maneuver. If you prefer to hoe while sitting (some people cannot stand for long periods) the circle hoe is a hand tool you will appreciate. The secret to this hoe is the shape. It allows for the safest working between plants. The sides are dull. This keeps the hoe from cutting into the plants as you are working. When using it, the blade cuts away from the plants. The weeds are cut away and the soil is broken up for easier root spreading. It has a short handle, approximately 15 inches and the circle part of the hoe is about 2 ½ inches. This is a light tool which allows you to get to the root of the matter in a hurry. It is great for working with plants which are close together in your garden.

A long handled garden spade is essential for preparing your ground for planting if you don't have use of a rototiller. Choose a spade that is the right height and weight for your comfort. It is important to sharpen the tip of your spade occasionally, as it is much easier to use when it is kept sharpened. Spades also come in handy when you need to move a plant from one area of your garden to another.

Long handled metal rakes are quite useful when gardening. Like the small hand rake, they are used to loosen and smooth the dirt, remove rocks and debris from your garden, and kill small weeds that appear by the millions (it seems!) after a good rain.

A bulb trowel is another hand garden tool that can be used for planting bulbs as well as perennials. The blade is beveled for the ease of cutting up soil that may be compacted. The trowel can remove weeds with its serrated blade. This tool is perfect for working in small areas.

Planting hoes are another great tool you will need for planting seeds. The mini planting hoe will make the perfect holes for your seeds every time. With twin prongs, it is capable of breaking up the soil so that you have good, loose aerated soil for planting.

A brush grubber is a hand tool that allows you to get to those pesky weeds that are trying to take over your garden. This tool is spring operated and the teeth can snatch roots, bushes and vines right out of your garden.

You may see a few other hand garden tools you would like to invest in. Make sure you have the right tools for the job and your gardening projects will bring you much satisfaction! Be sure to check the tools carefully before you purchase, to make sure they are the right fit for you.
