Growing Organic Healthy Food for Your Family

Growing Organic Vegetables

Growing organic vegetables garden is a way to eat very healthy food, and save money at the same time.

You never know what they put into or on the outside of the food you eat.

Most non-organic food has been sprayed multiple times with chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.

No one knows exactly what effect these chemicals have on people; especially children.

Therefore, planting an organic vegetable garden is one sure way to protect yourself and your family from these unknowns, while providing superior-quality fresh and nutritious food from your garden!

Planting an Organic Vegetable Garden

Starting your own organic vegetable garden will save you money in the long run.

The savings might not be that great the first year if you need to invest in materials to prepare your garden.

But after that, growing organic vegetables can provide big savings, and be fulfilling in other ways as well.

Organic Vegetable Garden Planning Video

  • When planting an organic garden in-ground, much of the effort will be up front, as you need to prepare the soil for your garden.

  • You will likely need to add compost, and/or humus, and old well-rotted manure to your existing soil to provide the proper growing conditions for your vegetables.

  • If you are planning a container garden, simply use new potting soil in your containers each year to provide ideal growing conditions for your plants.

Make Your Own Compost for Your Organic Vegetable Garden

Many organic gardeners create their own compost for use in their vegetable garden.

Just be aware of keeping your compost area "neighbor friendly" by making sure that it is not stinky or attracting nuisance animals to the neighborhood!

    • There are many things that you can use to make compost. Fruit and vegetable peels and discarded bits, banana skins, eggshells, coffee grounds, and tea leaves are great to add to the compost pile.
    • Growing Organic Vegetables

    • Always add a layer of grass clippings, or soil to your latest additions to your compost pile to help them breakdown quickly.

Provide natural organic fertilizer well-worked into your garden soil to promote happy healthy plants:

    • Goat, cow and sheep manure, provided that it is well-aged, can provide natural fertilizers for your garden.

    • Rabbits also provide good fertilizer rich in nitrogen which your garden plants will love.

    • Chicken manure is great fertilizer, but usually it smells so bad that it cannot be used unless your garden is located FAR AWAY from your home.

Attract beneficial insects to your organic vegetable garden the "natural" way:

    • Plant some types of flowers that attract helpful insects such as lady bugs that feed on garden pests.

    • Plant flowers that attract bees that will aid in the pollination of your garden plants to ensure healthy crops.

Types of Organic Vegetable Plants to Grow

Growing Organic Vegetables in a Square Foot Garden

All types of vegetable plants can be grown organically.

In fact, most home gardeners do not use chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers in their gardens.

When growing organic vegetables, be aware that some of your vegetables will not look as "picture perfect" as those seen in the grocery store, but they will taste better, and be more nutritious.

  • You can easily grow many types of lettuce, beans, beets, radishes, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, onions, eggplant in an organic garden, depending on your soil conditions and growing season.

  • Choose your favorite vegetables to begin with, and add more gradually as you gain experience.

  • Environment-Friendly Organic Vegetable Gardening

So have some fun, and start planning your first organic garden!

Growing organic vegetables in your garden not only saves you money, but also contributes to sustaining a healthy environment.

You will enjoy watching your garden grow, while being connected to mother nature in the great outdoors.

And best of all, you can actually eat the delicious healthy fruits of your labor!
